Texas Signs New Craft Brewer Law

Austin, Texas: It was a big step forward for the craft brewery in business when Texas finally re-wrote several Prohibition-era rules and signed them into law.

Texas, which touts itself as business-friendly, finally showed some love to craft brewers of the state.

The new law should be a boon to the fast-growing craft brew business here in Texas — and possibly help lead to more re-writes across the nation.

Some of the highlights of the bills includes:
SB515: Would allow brewpubs to produce up to 10,000 barrels a year (up from 5,000 barrels). It also will allow brewpubs to sell to a distributor, instead of being limited to just selling on-site.

SB516 & SB517: Allows breweries that produce 125,000 barrels a year to distribute up to 40,000 of those barrels independently.  This limit was previously capped for brewers producing over 75,000 barrels a year.

SB518: Allows breweries that produce less than 225,000 barrels per year to sell pints directly to consumers at their sites.  This will help reduce the “trickery” that was previously needed–such as selling the tour and a glass–and giving the beer away for free.

These new laws should help small breweries and craft brewers dramatically increase sales in the coming years.

About time, Texas!  Which state is next!??!
